As this number will greatly exceed the usual size, we do not intend to publish another this year, and therefore must now present a statement of our accounts, although it is considerably less than a year since we last did so. A balance then remained of. 113 14s. Od. to the new account, (see No. VIII. p. 119, ) and of this sum 16 was taken for the support of the young Evangelist, L. G., who came to Pisa strongly recommended by an Evangelist in Milan, as likely to turn out well as a fresh labourer. He was not however on trial found to be altogether satisfactory, nor did he realize the expectations which had been formed of him; we were therefore requested to discontinue his support by the friends in England who had sanctioned the appropriation of their donation of 100 to the training of young men (who appeared to be alike capable and desirous of devoting themselves to the work of Evangelization), and likewise to return the balance of their 100, which remained in our hands. We must confess this was somewhat tantalizing when aid was so greatly needed to carry on and enlarge the work in Pisa, of which the development is continually crippled by want of funds; we therefore felt ourselves justified in taking for it the remainder of the money confided to us; and the increasing responsibility connected with it has obliged us reluctantly to decide on limiting our direct efforts, for the present, to the town and province of Pisa, where we hope in the course of a few months a fresh centre of Evangelization will be opened.
