Detractors and obstructionists there are plenty, who want to control and keep the monument industry down in the old worn groove of uncertainty and hesitation. Some who recognize the birth of a new and brighter era want to capitalize it. Others don't want to see any improvement unless they can have their own way about it, and another refuses to see that anything big has got started. Then there is that pitiable class who have not yet realized that the Civil War is over, and forget that swift and big things are hard to catch and bridle. Fledgings grow into eagles, and eagles fly wherever they please. One may want to fix up a scheme to collect tribute, and a selfcentered extremist here and there may contemplate the elimination of everything not to be found upon his program, and everybody who can't be measured with his yardstick. All these are indicative of various kinds of recognition given to the change of ideas in the monumental trade. Naturally all such look askance and begrudge the confidence of the American Stone Trade, which was first to snatch up the banner of progress and take the lead of the American monument industry into its greater and nobler future. No one nor a thousand banded together can now quench or stop the flame of progress, since it is recognized by the ambitious and the enterprising members of the craft who have long hungered and thirsted for bigger opportunities and a place of their own in the sunshine of an unbiased industry fully commercialized. Be of good cheer, all you dubious ones. Multitudes of men with a free choice...
