T Fifty-eight: and he was buried in the city of David. J. Who succeeded him? T. Ahijara, who was his eldest son by his favourite wife Maachah. He was of an active and martial spirit. S. How did he shew it? T He was no sooner settled on the tbrone, than he resolved to endeavour the recovery of the ten tribes from Jeroboam. For which purpose he raised 400,000 men, and marehed against Jeroboam, who had assembled 800,000 in his own defence. The two armies being now near, before the hattle, Ahijam, getting on an eminence, resolved to expostulate with the Israelitish army; which he did in the most lively and moving terms, such as are haidly to be equalled by the best orations on the like occasion. Ho expostulated with them on their unjost revolt from his family; urged his righ from God's a reflection on Jeroboam's idolatry, and a declaration of his serving God in the manner he had commanded in the law; inferring from thence his expectance of divine assistance in this enterprise. Jeroboam, who was no ways solicitous to answer him in these points, while he was speaking, detached a number of men to march round.and cut off Abjjam's retreat. But the men of J odah, addressing themselves to God in prayer for success; while the priests blew the trumpets, the soldiers gave a great shout, and charged the Israelites so furiously, that they routed them, gave them no quarter, and slew no less than 500,000 of them; and Jeroboam endeavoured to secure the remainder of his army by flight. 5.
