The nearest thing to spot metal is "prompt delivery" which means shipments within 10 days to two weens, 'there has not been a quotation made on spot metal in more than carload lots given out here during the past 6 weeks and then the price was not made public. The New York and St. Louie quotations are not on a parity. With the natural differential of 20 cents per hundred the New York figures are at least 10 and 15 cents below what they should be. With October selling in St. Louis at 5.35 the New York quotation should be at least 5.50 to 5.55, depending on the routing of the consignments and not 5.42%. It is now claimed, however, that some 80 per cent of the spelter transactions are made in this market, the New York mar-et ueing patronized chiefly by small traders and the purchasers of the product of the New Jersey Zinc Company. That being the case, the St. Louis figures really govern the situation. The spelter market opened Monday morning with prices a shade lower than those of last week--and with no apparent cause. The buyers spoken of in last week's issue of The Lead and Zinc News were in the field. Sales of 300 tons November-December delivery at 5.20 revealed the lower tone of the market and were followed by sales or 180 tons October at 5.35 and 100 tons prompt shipments at 5.25, a figure apparently unwarranted by any change which had arisen over Sunday. October was held firm on Tuesday at 5.35, with 50 tons sold at that figure and 5.3i asked for November-December, a riss over night of 10 cents.
