The first part visions the origin and naming of the Lombards, and the following text is more resembling a king-list, up until the rule of Perctarit (672688). The account was originally compended as part of larger codexes, mostly containing legalistic writings . These types were called into existence under the reign of Rothari - they are known as Edictus Rothari or Leges Langobardorum . As such, Origo Gentis Langobardorum is preserved in three manuscripts, Origo Gentis Langobardorum is also the textual source of the Lombard theonym godan (Wdanaz). The 'Origo' is summarized somewhat faithfully in the Historia gentis Langobardorum by Paulus Diaconus. For the legend of origin Paulus Diaconus make a separate text paragraph for respectively the conflict with the Vandals and the consulting with Frea and Godan, and he precede the description of Frea and Godan with "loco antiquitas ridiculum fabulam" . Whereas the 'Origo' is only extant in three copies, there are hundreds of medieval copies of the 'Historiae' . Following is a free translation; Origin Winnili women with their hair tied as beards looking up at Wodan and Frigga (1905) by Emil Doepler.The text mentions an island Scandanan, the home of the Winnili.
