Excerpt: Ernest Lee ("Ernie") Fletcher (born November 12, 1952) is a physician and Republican politician from the U.S. state of Kentucky. He served as the 60th Governor of Kentucky from 2003 to 2007, losing his re-election bid to Democrat Steve Beshear. Prior to being elected governor, Fletcher served as U.S. Representative from Kentucky's 6th Congressional District and as a state representative from Lexington, Kentucky. He was also an Air Force fighter pilot, engineer, family doctor, and lay minister. Following his term as governor, Fletcher became CEO of Alton Heathcare near Cincinnati, Ohio. Ernie Fletcher was born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky on November 12, 1952. He was the third of four children born to Harold Fletcher, Sr. and his wife, Marie. The family owned a farm and operated a general store near the community of Means. Harold Fletcher also worked for Columbia Gas, and when Ernie was three weeks old, Harold was transferred to Huntington, West Virginia. Two years later, the Fletchers returned to Kentucky, living in Robertson County until Ernie was in the first grade. It was then that they finally settled in Lexington. Fletcher attended Lafayette High School in Lexington where he was a member of the National Beta Club. His senior year, he was an all-state saxophone player and was chosen prom king. After graduating in 1970, he matriculated to the University of Kentucky. Following his freshman year, he married his high school sweetheart, Glenna Foster. The couple has two children Rachel and Ben and four grandchildren. He was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
