Medical and Surgical Report of the Boston City Hospital Volume 3 (Paperback)

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 Excerpt: ...Samuel P. (Dr. F. H. Williams' service in 1899.) Seventyfive years old. Paralysis and anasthesia of legs for eight months. Absent reflexes, acute pneumonia. Autopsy showed pneumonia, acute pyelitis, cystitis, and atrophy of the brain with compensatory oedema of the pia. Gumma in right middle fossa. Dura was much thickened, and to the eye and touch seemed like velvet. Everywhere throughout were innumerable fine meshes of minute blood vessels. Opposite the left frontal prominence there appeared to be a slight free hemorrhage beneath the dura. The meshes of the arachnoid were filled with a clear fluid. Case 4.--Herbert J. (Dr. Bolles" service in 1901.) Thirty-four years old. Entered for fracture of the base after a fall of twenty-five feet. Delirious, active and irritable, with left facial paralysis, and quick nystagmus. Reaction of extremities normal. The irritability grew less, though never disappearing, the nystagmus ceased, and four weeks after admission he became stupid and comatose, and died. His temperature up to the last few days was normal or subnormal, his pulse being low, as a rule, also. Autopsy showed the dura to be smooth and pale, except over the base in the posterior fossa, where it was overlaid with a thin sheet of dark red hemorrhagic membrane, in some places adherent, and (2) over the right middle and anterior fossa, which showed a few sharply limited 1 oval areas, one to two centimeters in diameter, dark red to purple in color. There were multiple areas of softening in right hemisphere. Brain substance without oedema. Fracture of the left base. In the two following cases no operation was attempted. It is probable that it might have proven beneficial if done early enough. Case 5.--Christopher F. (Dr. C. F. Folsom's service in 1897.) Iri...
