A chance meeting on a golf course leads to a night of ecstasy, but he's turned out in the morning by a woman who's afraid of falling for a man leaving the Midwest. Phyllis, a friend of friends in San Francisco, tries to persuade Frank to live in the Bay Area instead of Southern California -- on their first (and last) date. Ruth is torn between her adopted son's need for a father and having to share the boy's affection and attention with a male role model. Carla, the broker for Frank's new home in Laguna Beach, likes him in bed, but would overshadow his every desire. Finally, Frank meets Tillie. She's anything but desperate, but willing to explore having a good life together.
