This is certainly the most uplifting book I have ever read. The Zapps, childhood sweethearts from the age of twelve, decide to drive from Argentina to Alaska... in a vintage 1928 car with wooden-spoked wheels and all. Their plan was to do it in six months, but it was just over four incredible years later that they achieved their dream. You become part of their journey as they teavel through many countries, finding only support, compassion and friendship as more and more people want to be part of their dream. Dreaded countries like Colombia and Nicaragua become vastly different places in both their and our eyes and the natural warmth of locals carries them on, both physically and emotionally. Vintage car enthusiasts in each county perform engineering miracles to keep the car on the road. It seems a truism that the less the locals had, the more they wanted to share what little they had. At the other end of the soectrum, even the high and mighty felt carried along by this dream, giving permissions/visas etc. where rules and regulations would nornally not allow. The book's main theme is about following your dream, regardless. As the Zapps said, the hardest part was just starting. They are a wonderful and attractive couple and it us easy to empathize with them as they dance with joy or weep with sorrow. There are many jaw-dropping moments throughout the book when you simply want to cheer out loud at how things work out. The book is originally written in Spanish and has been translated by someone they met along the way. Hermann Zapp is the main author, though he draws from his wife Cande's diary throughout. His style is amiable with a lovely sense of humour. He is also clearly adept at saying the right thingcat the right time with regard to complimenting his beautiful wife. We men can learn a lot from this young man! By the time their journey reaches its end, in Alaska in Winter and with a baby on board we, like then, don't want it to stop. It is a riveting book to read, utterly uplifting and enjoyable. When you are feeling despondent about human nature and the state of the world, this book will give you enormous hope. The Zapps and their car have continued to travel the world, including South Africa. This book, though, is where it all started, and that's what it's all about... starting.
