Asa Packer, of Mauch Chunk--being to afford the young men of the valley a complete technical education for those professions which had developed the peculiar resources of the surrounding region. It need scarcely 1 said that the institution of which this was the beginning i the now rapidly-rising Lehigh University, wherein the students receive, altogether without charge, the best possible instruction in civil, mechanical, and mining engineering, chemistry, metallurgy, and construction, and in all needlul collateral studies. That the utility of the institution might be extended to the utmost the provision for needful collateral studies has been very liberally interpreted. French and German were made important elements in the collegiate course; afterwards a school of general literature was added, and tuition given in the ancient classics; and recently Sunday service has been opened in the College Chapel, and lectures on Pyschology and the Christian evidences are statedly delivered by the President. Retaining his interest in the welfare of the University, Judge Packer has just expended a considerable sum in the purchase of books and magazines, and has determined to erect, at large expense, extensive library and chapel buildings for the convenience of professors, students, and citizens. The tuition is free in all branches and classes, and candidates from all parts of the world are admissible, provided they only can pass the entrance examinations; and that the gratuitous instruction offered may be within reach of the largest possible number, buildings have been erected in whioh students can have board, lodging, light, and firing for 5 dollars a week, or 4 dollars when two occupy a room jointly, and it is intimated that even this can be re...
