many various races which make up the population of Russia, combined
with the interest universally felt at this moment in everything
relating to that extensive Empire, has induced us to bring forward
a descriptive account of the tribes occupying its surface,
including all those nations who have been conquered by the dominant
race, or absorbed into its body. This is accompanied by, and in
some degree founded upon, the great Ethnological and Statistical
Map of Russia which was published by the Imperial Geographical
