If you loved "Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse" you'll enjoy "Goth Girl and the Fete Worse than Death". The wordplay and references will amuse and this new adventure will see some new mysteries and danger for the heroine. There is a cast of new characters, such as the baker, William Flake, and his ginger cat, Tyger Tyger; the mysterious Sir Whimsy; Vlad and the Glum Stokers; and many more. The references in the names are a bit obscure at times and will probably only be spotted by older readers, but this does not distract from the story itself. Of course, the sneaky Maltravers was up to no good yet again; the question was just what he was up to this time. It's all enough to keep you reading to find out just what will happen next. As an adult reader, I felt that the author missed some great opportunities to build in a bit of drama and tension, since the events certainly called for a bit of suspense. This is good story but without the interest of discovering Ghastly Gorm Hall and all of its mysteries, it held less appeal to me than the first book. However, for children, the story will invite easy reading and an enjoyable experience.
