People at all times, in all stages of civilization, have indulged in a desire for decoration of their person and their dwelling. Even among savages we find an appreciation of the beautiful. If we examine their crockery, weapons, blankets, mats, clothing, pipes, boats, etc., we shall find much taste and skill displayed in the decoration. Their elements are quite simple, --often only straight lines arranged in a manner to secure pleasing effects. The reverse, however, is true of some of their attempts at beautifying their bodies, such as blackening and filling their teeth and tattooing. Draw two colored sketches illustrating Savage ornament. Egyptian Ornament The earliest known style of ornament that shows no foreign influence is the Egyptian, dating from about 1800 B. C. As a rule the elements of Egyptian decoration have a particular meaning, forming what is called symbolic ornament. The pyramids, sphinxes. tombs, ruins, as at Karnak and Thebes, furnish examples.
