Not illustrated. 1839 Excerpt: ... the whole of Scotland; (2) of Southern and Midland Synods; (3) of the Northern Synods; and (4) of the Border Synod of Merse and Teviotdale: the parishes being classified according to their respective population. As the object of the classification in the table immediately preceding was to exhibit the comparative state of parishes in regard to the poor, according as these were "not assessed," "voluntarily assessed," or "legally assessed," so the object of the classification adopted in this table is to show what influence is produced by the extent of population in a parish, upon the state and administration of the poor. With reference to the number of parishes assessed, the following results appear: --Of the 71 parishes having a population under 500, 22 are assessed; but of these 16 are situated in the Border Synod of Merse and Teviotdale (in which every parish is assessed); so that, of the 55 parishes under 500 of population throughout the rest of Scotland, 6 are assessed. Of the 191 parishes under 100, but above 500 of population, 52 are assessed; whereof 21 are in the Synod of Merse and Teviotdale, and 17 in the adjoining Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. Deducting the parishes of the above population in these two Synods, there remain 147 throughout the rest of Scotland, of which 14 are assessed. Of the 312 parishes between 1000 and 2000 of population, 69 are assessed; whereof 18 are in the Synod of Merse and Teviotdale, and 20 in that of Lothian and Tweeddale. Deducting the parishes of the above population in these two Synods, there remains 265 throughout the rest of Scotland, of which 31 are assessed. Of the 234 parishes between 2000 and 5000 of population, 53 are assessed; whereof 8 are in the Synod of Merse and Tiviotdale, a...
