Sacred Caesarean Catholic Majesty: I, Don Pedro Gutierrez de Ayala, lawful son and heir of Diego Gutierrez who was appointed Governor and Captain-General by Your Majesty of the Province of Veragua, and of all the rest that was contained in the capitulation and agreement which Your Majesty commanded to be made with the said Diego Gutierrez to whom I refer, --I say that the said Diego Gutierrez, my father, is dead, as Your Majesty has known already, and for this reason Your Majesty commanded that I should be notified that, within nine days following, I might appoint a person to take charge of the administration of the said province, which order was extended until the day of The Kings (Epiphany) of the year 1547. Therefore, in compliance with such order, I appoint as such Governor and Captain-General of the said Province of Veragua and of the other regions contained in the capitulation, so that he may go and may hold all that the said Diego Gutierrez could and should hold and govern in conformity therewith (except what is below retained for myself), Juan Perez de Cabrera, domiciled in the city of Cuenca, an able person and capable of taking charge of the said offices and-all other things which the said Diego Gutierrez could and ought to hold; he is a person who has been and lived in that region, has much knowledge of it and has been Governor and Captain-General of the boundaries (confines2) of Veragua for Your Majesty, a gentleman, an hidalgo, well related in these kingdoms and a person who is suitable for the service of God and Your Majesty and for the welfare and progress of these provinces, etc. 1 Honduras.
