Alice Mae and Charles Yates raise three children on their sorry small form in Hazen, Arkansas. When Alice finds out some huzzy across town "is messing with her husband Charles" she pays her a home visit. That night she serves Charles a chunk of the woman's red hair. When Alice dies leaving Charles to raise three children he decides to join a circus as a human fly. Charles is murdered, later, trying to steal food to feed his family.
