High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! John Robert Monsell, or sometimes J.R. Monsell, (15 August 1877 - 20 March 1952) was an Irish illustrator. He illustrated numerous children's books, and wrote and illustrated three of his own. His edition of William Makepeace Thackery's The Rose and the Ring was hugely successful. He married novelist Margaret Irwin and designed the dustjackets of her books. He was regarded as one of the best humourous illustrators for children of the Edwardian period. Monsell's first picture book The Pink Knight was published by Chatto & Windus in 1901, and was followed in 1905 by Funny Foreigners, The Jingle Book, and Notable Notions. He contributed to several magazines including Little Folks, and many of his sketches appeared in Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia.
