It is named after the Ojibwe Ginebig, meaning "Snake," after the Snake River Kanabecosippi which flows through this county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 533 square miles (1,381 km ), of which 525 square miles (1,360 km ) is land and 8 square miles (22 km ) (1.58%) is water.
