The film was produced by Madhouse and released by Warner Bros. Pictures Japan. The film stars the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki, Nanami Sakuraba, Mitsuki Tanimura and Sumiko Fuji. After the critical and box office success of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Hosoda decided to direct Summer Wars with the intention of making it widely acceptable to audiences. The film's development lasted three years due to the addition of characters in Natsuki's family and Ueda was chosen as the setting for the film due to part of the territory being governed by the Sanada clan at one time.
