CHARA, a genus of the monanclria order, in the moncecia class of plants. There is neither male calyx nor corolla; and theanthera is placed under thegermen. The female calyx is tetraphyllous; no corolla; the stigma quin quefid, with one roundish seed. There are 4 species. CHARACTER, in a general sense, denotes any mark whatever, serving to represent either things or ideas: thus letters are characters, types, or marks, of certain sounds; words, of ideas, &c. If one person apply to another for the character of a third person, and a good character as to his solvancy be given, yet if, in consequence of this opinion, the party asking the question suffix loss through the person's insolvency, no action lies against him who gave the character if it were fairly given. 1 Esp.
