As consignments of goods from these two centres are mixed with Russian and local goods, and brought in in small consignments by many roads, and are also largely re-exported to Khaf, Barkharz and Afghanistan, it is impossible to check this trade accurately. The figures in the accompanying table have been given me by the leading broker of the place; his version of the exports corresponds exactly with the figures in my registers, but I cannot help thinking the figures for imports are over-stated. Of the cotton tissues imported about three-eighths are reexported to Afghanistan. As regards the fostering of British trade, the problem differs in no way from that which faces us in the rest of Khorassan. Trade with Afghanistan.--Imports 40,78S/., exports 6,625/. I give the customs figures, but, as there has been no inspection, probably there are inaccuracies in values and omissions. Of the imports, in value 40,788/., of which wool accounts for 26,869., and sheep-skins and carpets for another 6.347Z., the greater part is re-exported through Meshed, Of the exports to Afghanistan, dried fruit, copper utensils, silk and madder, amounting to about 425J., are local produce, while the cotton tissues (5,684/.) are mostly British re-consigned from Yezd. The Afghan trade through Turbat-i-Haidari is decreasing to such an extent owing to the operations of the Jewish and Armenian agents at Karez, who consign through Meshed, that this has ceased to be a customs station.
