Dictionary of Alkaloids (Hardcover)

This large two-volume dictionary is the definitive work on this crucially important class of compounds. It clearly presents structure, physical property, biological source and bibliographic data on around 10,000 alkaloids within 5,000 entries. The extensive indexes are conveniently bound in a separate volume: Name, Molecular Formula, CAS Registry Number, Type of Compound and Species Indexes. The Dictionary of Alkaloids fully documents all alkaloids of known structure at the end of 1987; also extensive documentation of alkaloids of unknown structure. The Dictionary of Alkaloids is a wholly new work, incorporating 90% new material, expertly compiled. While 30% of these alkaloids are mentioned in the Dictionary of Organic Compounds (1982), their entries have been expanded considerably (to serve the specific needs of alkaloid researchers in various fields) and updated to 1987. All other entries are completely new. Covers not only plant alkaloids but also fungal alkaloids, frog and animal toxins and other related classes of nitrogenous natural products. Entries present structure, physical properties, occurrence and biological properties, including pharmacology, toxicology and other biochemical effects. There are extensive listings of botanical and zoological sources. The documentation is comprehensive for rare alkaloids and extensive for common alkaloids; thus for alkaloids occurring in a restricted range of species, full species documentation is provided; for widespread alkaloids a full general list gives accurate description of the alkaloid's distribution. Every entry is flagged to indicate the familial occurrence of the alkaloids. Physical properties include: physical description, melting point, and/or boiling point, dissociation constant, optical rotation, extensive citation of multiple values and assessment of inconsistent data. The Dictionary contains over 15,000 references altogether; some entries contain as many as 30 references. This book should be of interest to researchers and libraries in chemical and pharmaceutical companies; academic researchers and libraries; key fields: pharmacognosy, botany, biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, forensic science, phytochemistry, taxonomy, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry.
