1895. With 250 illustrations from the Hon. Gardiner G. Hubbard's collection of Napoleon engravings, supplemented by pictures from the collections of Prince Victor Napoleon, Prince Roland Bonaparte, Baron Larrey and others. Tarbell was doing graduate work in French Revolution-era women's history in Paris and to pay for her living expenses she wrote articles for American papers and magazines. Her series on Napoleon for McClure's Syndicate gained both Tarbell and McClure's wide acclaim. The series was published as this book and was a commercial success. Tarbell went on to further fame, becoming one of the original muckrakers for her role in helping to shut down the Standard Oil monopoly.
