This books follows the main character from being an only child growing up in New York who was raised by loving parents, struggling to overcome a low self-esteem, to a young man of seventeen choosing to join the United States Army to follow in his fatheras footsteps as a medic, to a twenty-one-year-old in the war-torn country of Vietnam. Through the struggles he had to endure as a leader, he learned to never second-guess the decisions he was forced to make, which earned him the respect of his fellow comrades.
