Not illustrated. 1899 Excerpt: ...study of such things, and an educated and leisured class are not to be replaced by uncultivated and venal writers. Yet the belief that this can be done is one of the grave fallacies of the day, and history as well as scientific knowledge is clouded by the ephemeral efforts of those who care little or nothing for accuracy, if only the work, or imitation of work, they produce, can command a sale for a short time, till the reading public have leisure to detect the trash that has been palmed off upon them. In this way it has been possible to give out many very fallacious explanations of the chronology of the sacred writings which on examination prove to be the mere guesses of persons who would not, or could not, give sufficient time to the subject they undertook; and this is not by any means a new thing, nor is it confined to mere adventurers. So far back as the year r..c. 1600, we find to the length of the "saros " of Berosus and Abydenus, and if we come down to modern criticism, we find even more unjustifiable hypotheses brought forward, and accepted as facts, without a scintilla of real evidence. To describe an entirely imaginary lapse of time, absurd words have been resorted to, and "aeons" have been substituted for "ages,"perhaps with some degree of fitness, for the word is as indefinite as the idea, but without any better foundation than that "internal consciousness" which used formerly to be called "conceit," and be stigmatized accordingly, but now finds from the numerous incompetent readers an ephemeral acceptance as "advanced science" and " up to date " reasoning.
