"What is truth V was the sceptical question of one who stood in the awful presence of the very Truth and knew it not. "What is truth V is the question which. all schools, except the dogmatic, have been ever asking, seeking a reply in the reasonings of their own hearts, in the heaven above and in the world of mystery lying around them. A great question; and if rightly, that is humbly, propounded, already half answered. A great question, befitting every responsible being; and to be inscribed on every hall of learning and forum of discussion. A great question and pressing, but not our question to-night. For the present we suppose that we have found truth; not all truth, nor perhaps all of any truth, B but some truth. We have it. Our inner consciousness, or the weight of evidence, or the teaching of experience, testify to it as truth. Our question to-night is this, What effect should that truth have on our habits of thought and our whole life? In other words, To what extent is truth to actuate and influence us? Is truth a barren, powerless, sterile something, which can be with us and in us, leaving our motives untouched, our thoughts uninfluenced, and our lives unchanged? Or is truth so grand, so queenly, so all-important, that she will reign within us if she dwell within us at all? Is truth the plaything of the intellect, or is it the master of the whole man? Is it the mere object of inquiry, or is it the ever-living director of the head and heart and life? It is the latter position we are here to assert, and, if need be, to defend.
