The King was in Normand' at the time of Theobalds death, and was attended by Thomas Arch-Deacon of Canterbury, whose services there were so necessary to him, that whatever thoughts he might have of his succeffion, that chair was not fill'd till the year following. zmnzz, SECT. xI. The King having determin'd to put that important trust into the hands of his present Chancellor, in order thereunto he sent him into England, where, by the appointment of Hem? the father, his son Henry, lately crown'd King of England, summon'd a Council to meet at London; and the Prior and some of the Monks of Canterbury being commanded to attend that assembly, the said Prior and Monks, with the concurrence of the Bishops of the province, elected Thomas BecleezgProvost of Be-verhgArch-Deacon of Canterbury and Lord Chanccllor of England, Arch-Bishop. To fig him for that great station he was ordain'd Priest-on on Trinity Sunday this year, and in the beginning of Henry II. Yune following was consecrated Bishop, by Henry Bi-Affl-"Wshop of Issznchefler, affisted by several other Bishops of the province. This Prelate was the son of a Merchant, and born in London, and is said to be the first Engli/Iz-man advanc'd to the See of Canterbzny since the Norman conquest. He was at this time the great favourite and minister of Hemy the Second, and at his desire chosen Arch-Bishop; and as Chancellor had acquitted himself so much to the...
