Joseph Conrad's An Outcast of the Islands (1896) deals with man's constant struggle against nature and his own impulses. A man without empathy, Peter Willems, a clerk in Macassar is granted a second chance at a remote river trading post where he falls into traps set by him and others. As the native population tries to win back power, a war breaks out and entangles the characters.
