Oper Im Weltformat (English, German, Hardcover)

The Zurich-based graphic designer Karl Domenic Geissbuhler has created poster designs for Zurich's opera house and other theatres as well as cultural events since 1976. Oper im Weltformat covers the last 22 years of his work, during which he designed hundreds of posters - a fascinating retrospective and a visual guide to the opera. It might seem like a paradox: Geissbuhler did not coin a specific style with his work, yet, over many years he managed to create a distinct visual identity for Zurich's opera with posters that embody a clear artistic vision. Confident and unconcerned with any supposedly important adherence to a specific style K.D. Geissbuhlers posters combine elements from painting and graphics, photography and illustration with pictorial typography and formal abstraction. The central themes of human life - love, hate, death and beauty - are found in endless and inexhaustible variations. In each poster, image and writing form a new, striking composition. Text in German with a foreword in English.
