Praxis-Oriented Theology and Spirituality in the Sermons of Edward Schillebeeckx (Hardcover)

This is the first book to argue that spirituality and practical theology can be integrated by using Catholic theologian Edward Schillebeeckx's understanding of the role played by human experience in the methodologies of both spirituality and practical theology. His sermons, considered as enactments of practical theology, explore various dimensions of this spirituality/praxis-oriented theology, and how he uses the category of human experience therein. Interest in the study and practice of spirituality has increased remarkably in the past two decades in academia and in public discourse, as well as within institutionalized settings. The renewed interest in the praxis associated with spirituality is reflected likewise in the re-emergence of "practical philosophy" and the associated rebirth of practical theology. The present situation invites dialogue and mutually critical reflection by practical theologians and spirituality scholars/practitioners. This dissertation argues that spirituality and practical theology can be integrated by using Catholic theologian Edward Schillebeeckx's understanding of the role played by human experience in the methodologies of both spirituality and practical theology. His integration of practical theology and spirituality is brought out in greater relief in his sermons that elsewhere in his work.
