Hone made his debut for Ireland in August 1868, playing against I Zingari. He was bowled for a duck in the only Irish innings, and bowled for the only time in his international career, taking 1/20 in the second innings. He would not play again for Ireland for almost ten years, making his return in August 1878, again playing against I Zingari. He played four times for Ireland in 1879, against the MCC and Surrey before touring North America, playing two matches against Philadelphia. He scored 87 against the MCC, his only half-century for Ireland. He played three more times for Ireland, his final game being against Philadelphia in June 1884.
