It lies approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) north of Purda and 15 km (9 mi) east of the regional capital Olsztyn. Before 1945 the area was part of Germany (East Prussia). Gmina Purda is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Olsztyn County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. Its seat is the village of Purda, which lies approximately 16 kilometres (10 mi) south-east of the regional capital Olsztyn. The gmina covers an area of 318.19 square kilometres (122.9 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 7,268. Olsztyn County (Polish: powiat olszty ski) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, northern Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998.
