The picture tells the story of Nehalata (Sridevi), a young woman who regresses to childhood after suffering a head injury in a car crash. Lost, she ends up trapped at a brothel before being rescued by Somu (Kamal Haasan), a lonely school teacher who falls in love with her. The film is a remake of 1982 Tamil film Moondram Pirai. Sadma won much critical acclaim but was not a commercial success. However over the years it has been hailed as a modern masterpiece and has become a cult classic and the performances of Kamal Hasan and Sridevi have been regarded by many as their best ever.
