After lunch we took carriage and drove to the quarry of King Solomon, from which the stones were taken for his temple and for the wall of Jerusalem. It is near the Damascus Gate, on the north side, and begins at the city wall. It is different from any quarry we ever knew or heard of. It is a tunnel under the city. The city is built on hard limestone rock, which protrudes in places ten and twelve feet above the surface. This tunnel dips downward and widens out as we get farther in, with numerous galleries to right and left. It must descend fifty feet or more, and these subterranean chambers honeycomb the city. There are miles of them. Some have never been explored. We saw three blocks of stone that had not been removed. The rock is finer as you go farther in. It is not safe to go in alone; black as pitch. We used lighted tapers. Our party looked weird and ghostlike. Much of Freemasonry is based on happenings in these tunnels and around the temple. A huge, lofty, square chamber, several hundred yards in, is mythically said to be the place where the first lodge was held. Even now enthusiastic pilgrim Masons open lodge in this dark hole. The entire quarry is dry. We have yet to find a single running stream around Jerusalem. We visited the tombs of the ancient Judean Kings; they are square chambers hewn in the solid rock. To enter we had to stoop low--go on our hands and knees. They are empty but not lacking in interest. There are no arches in these tombs. They must date a long way back.
