Oyinbo - Expatriate Tales from Nigeria (Paperback)

On 1 October, 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from the United Kingdom. The following day, Lesley Jones stepped off the airplane at Lagos Airport and smelled the sweet, warm tropical air for the first time. Married for only three months, she had arrived with her husband, the future novelist and journalist D.A.N. Jones, to teach at a school in Ijebu-Igbo in the western Yoruba region. Aged just 20, she was happy to simply be there and share the experience with him. There were to follow two years, during which Lesley gave birth to the first two of her four children, Sarah Bamidele Jones and Nicholas Shegun Jones. They were also years during which she was to witness first-hand the fading days of British colonialism and the emergence of a new nation. 50 years later, some of those days are recalled in a unique glimpse into a past that, while gone, should not be forgotten.
