Not illustrated. 1870 Excerpt: ...duty it is to supervise personally the general attendance of the college, the percentage of attendance has fallen from 9 L to 87 per cent for the year, and the number on the rolls from 297 to 246, with a corresponding difference in the fees of Rs. 153-4-8. The Headmaster writes: --" The decline is mainly attributable to the effects of the late epidemic, which exceeded in severity anything that has been witnessed in the district for years, the year 1869 not excepted. During the months of October and November instruction was virtually at a stand still. Scarcely two-thirds of the boys in the junior classes could be got to attend, and with three, four, and sometimes five teachers away through sickness, the classes were threatened with complete disorganization. "Something is also due to the effects of a two-years' famine, which, having reduced four-fifths of the population to a mere hand-to-mouth existence, has increased the dependence of parents and guardians upon the younger members of the family. "The admission-book shows 138 withdrawals to 87 admissions. Numbers of those who were obliged to withdraw, or were struck off, have already returned." 17. The quarterly prizes for handwriting gained by this college bear favourable testimony to the industry and success of the Writing-master, Lala Sree Ram. At every quarter a fair number of prizes has been won; and the following statement will at a glance show the actual success during the year: --18. The new building has only the portico unfinished. The selection of one of the large rooms next to the centre hall for the library has made it more accessible, while permission to the teachers and senior classes to resort to it during their leisure hours, has drawn an attendance in the room of both teache...
