Zinc is the second most abundant cation in the brain and serves as an endogenous modulator of several important receptors including gamma-aminobutyric acid, NMDA and opioid receptors. The areas of the brain containing high contents of zinc also seem to possess a high level of Metallothioneins (MT). Metallothioneins are low molecular-weight zinc-binding proteins. The concentration of zinc has been shown to be altered in an extensive number of disorders of the central nervous system. This publication contains basic research articles on the status of zinc MTs and other low-molecular weight zinc-binding proteins in these conditions and diseases.
