Men, brethren, and fathers: We are met together here in the sight of God, first, to confess our sins of omission and commission, to ask forgiveness of the same, to render thanks for benefits received, to praise God, and to hear His most holy Word; and secondly, and somewhat more especially to-day, to endeavor, in the light of God's Holy Spirit (which He is ever more ready to give than we to use) to arrive at a right judgment about a matter of vital importance to seven million human souls for whose well-being the United States of America has accepted the responsibility, and must give strict account to Almighty God- A sermon preached in the Church of St. Mary and St. John, Manila, June 17th, 1906, at the beginning of the campaign against gambling waged by the Moral Progress League, of the executive committee of which the preacher was at the time chairman.
