Ripley steps westward from his normal comedy thriller series Angel, set mainly in the East End, to provide a comedy crime caper based in and around Heathrow Airport, showing how to set up a heist and get away with it. 'Big Benny' and his gang will steal anything lucrative and here it's drugs. The Metropolitan police think they have him for a large haul, but Benny's a slippery character and lives to thieve another day. The Met's finest are therefore delighted when they are tipped off that a heist is being planned and suspect Benny could be involved. Once again it is drugs, 'but not as we know them'. The Met start work on a counter-plan, and thereafter the plot takes on a surreal twist as Ripley cheerfully constructs his usual irreverent multicultural mayhem. It gets nasty when informants are forced to sample the horrors of 'Scotch Bonnet' peppers and chilies, and as the plot widens to take in Benny's rival 'Mortlake Eddy' it can only get worse - or better, depending on your perspective. There's a very definite hint of Agatha Christie in here providing you can sniff out the red herrings beneath the all-pervading aroma of Benny's beloved curry, but to say more would be to weaken Ripley's plot. This is a thoroughly entertaining read, and the good news is you can read it all over again from the very same paperback. The screenplay for the 'funniest caper movie never made' follows straight on from the novel - a true bargain. But be warned: you will never look at the humble pepper in the same way again.
