The engineering of aesthetic and functional requirements in textile fabrics and garments has been a topic of research and development for many years. With new materials and processes and with new end uses this continues to preoccupy researches even more so nowadays. The modeling of the performance of a textile, the design and styling of a garment and its perception are areas that are covered in this special issue, which consists of five extended research papers carefully chosen from the CESA multiconference on Computational Engineering in System Applications which took place between the 4th and 6th of October 2006 in China.
