The least successful and the least creditable of all the attempts to perpetrate European influence in the Near East after World War I, the British Mandate in Palestine was ignominiously given up by the British government in the spring of 1948 and handed over to the United Nations in the face of escalating violence between Zionists and Palestinian Arabs. This is a study not of those adversaries but of the British themselves and the way in which they carried out their task. The author shows that the Mandate was implemented by people on the spot who often had misgivings about their mission and whose loyalties were frequently divided. Above all it was based on a colonial code inappropriate to either place or time, with the British as 'umpires' standing between Arabs, who had been promised self-determination after 1918, and Zionists, who had been promised a national home in Palestine - both by the British themselves! The wonder is it survived as long as it did. (Kirkus UK)
A recreation of British rule in Palestine, from the winter of 1917, when battle-scarred troops in flimsy desert kit clambered through mountain mists to Jerusalem, to the spring of 1948 and the last High Commissioner's apologetic departure. In between that time, Jewish minority strengthened.
