With the operating company the work is much more varied in its character, as there are usually several types of meters, a wide range of sizes and a fair proportion requiring repair. As the testing constants and details of construction vary with the different types, a more extensive knowledge of meter work would be required by the tester in the employ of the operating company than the one employed by the manufacturer. From the limited experience obtained thus far the female testers are progressing on the routine testing at about the same rate as male testers, and their work is fully as satisfactory. They require more detailed personal instruction and supervision than the average male testers, particularly on meters requiring repairs, but after they have received sufficient training there is every reason to believe that the work will be done as thoroughly as by the average male testers, and the female will be more contented to continue on this class of work. With small companies it will be much more difficult to adopt female labor for meter testing, as the facilities available in the large companies for training are lacking. One serious drawback in the employment of female labor heretofore has been that the meter laboratory was used as a school for male testers who would ultimately do periodic testing on the system, but as under present conditions it is not a question of superseding male by female help but one of obtaining adequate help of any kind, this objection is not of any particular importance.
