The patriarchal dignity of the deceased is enhanced, as usual, by the presence of his family 1 Practical considerations would suggest that the second axe in his hands is a correction of the designer. The rounded top of the mallet may also be an error in the first sketch. 2 Some one seems to have added the remark, " I am coming," in explanation, perhaps, of the backward glance. as well as by the exhibition of his numerous retainers and serfs. His wife and seven sons are here represented, the latter of whom share only four names between them; in face, however, of the many examples of such a practice we may accept the record as true (see p. 12). A scene follows here so inappropriately that it must have been added merely to fill the vacant corner. It really belongs to the series on the W. side of the wall, and represents what was an important branch of farm economy, the keeping of fowl. Here two pens are stocked, the one with cranes, the other with geese, and grain is being thrown to them from a bag by an attendant.
