Birtha (Titular See) (Paperback)

Birtha is presently the name of a Roman Catholic titular see in the former Roman province of Osrhaene probably identical with modern Birejik on the left bank of the Euphrates, c. 62 miles west of Orfa and 95 miles north of Aleppo. Birtha is spoken of as a castle by ancient authors. There was also a see called by the Greeks Macedonopolis, the foundation of the great city being attributed by legend to Alexander the Great. That Macedonopolis and Birtha are one see is proved by the subscriptions at the First Council of Nicaea, where we see that in both Syriac and Arabic lists it corresponds with Macedonopolis in Greek and Latin lists.
