Not illustrated. 1813 Excerpt: ...eourt; and sueh report shall aseertain the name, birth 1812. plaee, age, nation, and allegianee of eaeh alien, together with the eountry whenee he or she migrated, and the plaee of his v.ii.LiiMf or her intended settlement; and it shall be the duty of the Little, elerk, on reeeiving sueh report, to reeord the same in his offiee. The evidenee to be reeeived, on the admission of sueh aliens to eitizenship, is, First, the eertifieate of registry as evidenee of the time of of arrival within the United States. Seeondly, the reeord of the deelaration of intention to beeome a eitizen. Thirdly, Satisfaetory proof by disinterested witnesses, that the residenee of the alien has been in eonformity with the Aet; and that during that time he has behaved as a man of good moral eharaeter, attaehed to the prineiples of the eonstitution of the United States. The aets and eonduet of the alien must eorrespond with the requisite evidenee; he must make the registry, whieh may be done before the elerk, in vaeation, or before the eourt in Term time--he must make his deelaration of intention, whieh must be done in open eourt; but may be made at the same time of the registry, or at a different time j he must reside; he must be of good moral eharaeter, and remain attaehed to the eonstitution; and Lastly, He must make his applieation to be aetually naturalized. It is the last step only, whieh the proviso, in the first seetion, forbids the alien to take, whenever the United States k at war with the eountry, state or sovereignty, of whieh he is, at the time, a native eitizen, denizen or subjeet; it refers expressly to the time of his applieation to be admitted to beeome a eitizen.
