We need not enlarge here, but we beg our readers to remember how many and how great are the departments of labor, all included in this rapid statement of the one general work of our foreign missions. Besides, provision should be made for sending out some new men. Losses from failure of health and return should be made good by new recruits, as in the march of an army. There are eight approved brethren under appointment, who ought to be sent out within the next two or three months. Must the Board keep any of them at home for want of funds? After careful consideration of the estimates, with an earnest purpose not to aim at much enlargement of expenditure in these times, the Board is satisfied that not less than $512,000 will be needed before the 1st of next May to maintain the Missions as they stand, including the sending out of some of the new men whose services seem to be imperatively.needed; to send out all now under appointment, and to pay off the debt of last year, would increase the amount to $560,000. At least $75,000 more could be used to great advantage, making the aggregate sum which was recommended in the Budget by the Committee of the General Assembly. All of the $75,000 might well be invested in buildings in different countries, thus saving large expense for rents; while new work might be undertaken on a larger scale than the closely watched estimates call for. Such, very briefly stated, is the financial case for the year. If all our Christian people would but take this work earnestly in hand, they could easily free this cause from financial restriction. ...
