When the note was due, it was not paid and I took a renewal note, and the way that note came to be discounted by Whelan was he had heard something about it and said in Quebec, " I shall cash that note," and I said if you do it, I will give you a discount on it and he gave me a cheque for nine hundred and eighty dollars, ($980)'charging twenty dollars for discounting it, and when it came due, that note could not be found. Mr. Pacaud and a number of his friends wanted to pay that note. That is the only thing I ever was mixed up in with Pacaud in any manner, shape or form. ' By Mr. Stuart: Q.
