Stimulus-response compatibility (SRe refers to differences in performance as a function of the relations between stimulus response sets and the mappings of the individual set members to each other. Although this phenomenon has been studied for at least 50 years, the 1990s saw an upsurge of research on the topic that has continued to the present, and this research yielded not only a large and varied set of empirical results but also significant theoretical advances. This book summarizes the state of contemporary knowledge regarding SRC effects broadly defined, and it provides thorough, up-to-date coverage of basic and applied research, with an emphasis on relating this knowledge to specific design guidelines.
