What a WONDERFUL film! And if you can bring yourself to accept Robin Williams in a completely straight and dramatic role for a change, you cannot help but enjoy it too.

Seymour "Sy" Parrish (Williams) leads a depressing solitary life as a mini-lab photo technician at SavMart's photo developing clinic in suburban Los Angeles. He is a small, dusty-looking late middle-aged man who lives all alone, save for the caged hamster in his bedroom. The heaven-like hyperreality atmosphere of the store offers him solace, and every day he labors at the lab to ensure his customers get the best quality photos possible; his work is his life, as he has no one and nothing to go home to at the end of each day. Sy therefore falls into the inescapable routine of spending his evenings sitting alone in his barren living room, watching television.
In short: his is very much a Chaplinesque kind of character.

His favorite customers are the Yorkin family: husband Will (Michael Vartan); wife Nina (Connie Nielsen), and their son Jake (Dylan Smith). He has done their photos for years and, over time, has developed an obsession with the family; he idolizes their happiness and affluence, memorizes every personal detail about them that he can learn, and finally begins to stalk them. Sy secretly makes his own copies of the Yorkins' photos from the film negatives and then puts them on a wall in his apartment in a massive collage. Most of all, he fantasizes about being a member of their family and sharing in the love he assumes they must feel. He is painfully shy, however, and his awkward attempts to become closer to the family are gently rebuffed. His boss Bill (Gary Cole) then fires him for stealing prints. While inspecting his photos for the last time, Sy discovers that Will is having an affair, and his idyllic conception of the Yorkins as the 'perfect' family is shattered. He comes to hate and envy Will, who has everything Sy longs for, yet doesn't seem to appreciate it.

Yes, there are sub-plots aplenty... and part of the beauty of the picture lies in the many ambiguities of the whole story - even the open ending, where it is left up to the viewer to decide how things will eventually pan out... or whether the picture only exists in Sy's mind!
It's a mini-masterpiece, and well worth every superlative you can think of!!!
Viewed through our photographs, it would seem we have lived a joyous, leisurely existence. Sy Parrish, who makes this observation, adversely leads a lonely life, operating a photo lab in a SavMart department store. He escapes his dreary reality through the family photos of Nancy Yorkin and her family.

His admiration of the Yorkins becomes an obsession, as he fashions himself as Uncle Sy to little Jake. But Sy's judgment becomes impaired by his unhealthy interest, causing him to risk his job of 11 years when he develops photographs revealing an indiscretion on the part of Mr. Yorkin.

The unstable Sy now develops a disturbing, calculated plan to instill family values to the Yorkin clan.
