All this shows itself in a new spirit in the school. Some of the 45 children who had never attended school, having been treated, have come in during the year. Others have declared their intention to enter in the fall. At this school I was shown two sanitary privies, just recently built by the school board. Similar ones I saw at other schools in the county. Every school in Dr. Fisher's territory is to be supplied before school opens in the fall. Dr. Fisher took me to see a large number of persons and families in the neighborhood of this school. Within a few minutes after Henry Thrift had given us the story of the school, we stopped by the fence where we saw a young man plowing corn. In reply to his greeting as he came to the end of his row, Dr. Fisher called out: "Hello, Willie. Where did you get that smile? I never saw it before." "Oh," he said, "I'm all right now. I'm workin' every day and feelin' fine." This was William King, age 26. One year ago he was in bed and had been given up to die; he had chronic sores on his legs up to his knees, and hadn't good blood enough to cure them up; he had all his life been an anemic, illiterate and thriftless. He was found heavily infected; was treated a few months ago; is well now, married a few weeks ago; is making a crop and in his own words is "workin' every day and feelin' fine."
